Chapter Twenty-Five

The Pit looked nothing like the sandy arena it usually was.

We were in the forest. With trees so big and high, I couldn’t see the crowd in the stands. I could hear them, though. Cheers and excitement coming from above me in waves. How the hell was this whole scenery possible? I had no idea.

The portal at the end of the short hallway had landed us somewhere deep within the forest. All nine of us were seemingly alone in the woods, standing in a small clearing around a bright yellow flag planted in the ground, the top peaking higher than my height. There was no way to hide that big ass flag. Which was probably the point. How fun would it be if the teams could hide their stupid banner during the game? No, watching kids fight to protect said flag was way more entertaining.

I wasn’t entirely sure how we were supposed to know when things started. Had the Trial begun already? Were members of the other teams already running toward us? Jeez, Artemis could have gone into more detail regarding the Trial process.

“Alright, team yellow, we only have a little time to organize, so let’s be quick about it.” The girl who took the lead was average-sized, with a gorgeous afro, deep dark skin, and the bluest eyes I had ever seen. If I remembered correctly, she was Nafula and a descendant of Poseidon, so she must have a power somewhat related to water, which might not be the most useful when in the middle of the forest.

“I say we should just go and attack another team for their flag; make this quick.” The guy who was seemingly seconds away from running into a fight was a bulky, dangerous-looking young man. He and his brother, the slightly smaller version of a gladiator next to him, were grandsons of Ares, the god of war. Cassian and… was it Rory? It might have been Ryan. Either way, both of them had come in bloodthirsty and looking for war.

“A good way to ensure we don’t lose is to prevent other teams from getting our flag. We can’t just all leave it to go hunt for someone else’s.” My words were met with an annoyed glance from Ryan – Riley?

“Don’t you know your place, mortal? I don’t think we’ve asked for your opinion.”

“She’s not wrong. You might want to think for a second – if we keep our flag, then we make sure we don’t end up in fourth place.” Mei gave the brothers a look – one that said, ‘Are you dumb?’ – before turning her attention to Nafula. “We should split up into three teams. And most of us should stay here to guard the flag.”

Nafula nodded her assent and assessed each of us in turn. “I agree, and I think we should keep our strongest fighters here to protect the flag. Then we could have two teams of two that go and hunt for the other teams’ flags.”

“But what
